South Shore Day

We're still getting up early 'cause we go to bed early, which is good because we get a lot done early in the day, and we have lots of time to explore. We checked out the weather because it's been pretty overcast over a lot of the island. So we thought we would head to where the clouds were least likely. Today, that was the south shore.

We headed back down through Lihue (only one main road), and turned south toward Po'ipu. We drove through a tree tunnel. Apparently it was much longer, but road workers have torn out a lot of the trees.

We stopped at Koloa, a nice little village. It was apparently the very first sugar cane town in all the Hawaiian islands. They have a little museum, and the remnant of a sugar cane mill. I don't know the guy in the first picture, but I think I know the guy in the second picture.

We then headed down to the shore and out to a place called "Spouting Horn". The waves roll in and a hole in the lava bench causes the water to spurt up into the air, with some interesting noises. Kind of neat.

We drove out through Po'ipu to the Maha'ulepu Beaches. Getting there was interesting. It was not even 2 kilometres to get there, but it took us 15-20 minutes one way. Technically we were off-roading. It was originally the roads through the cane fields...and not kept in very good shape. Our snazzy Mustang convertible is not made for this. Yikes! We made it there without damage to the car, and were so glad we did. The area was just beautiful. It was hard to pick just a couple of pictures to post here.

We walked along the shore and the "lithified" cliffs and stopped to have some lunch at the end of the trail.

A couple of crazy kite surfers.

On our return after the "long and bumpy road", we went to Brennecke and Poi'pu Beaches. We did our first snorkeling of our trip at Poi'pu Beach Park.

I can hear Shelly now, as I forgot to take her underwater camera with me. We saw some great colourful fish, but I don't have any pictures of them. Sorry Shelly. Maybe tomorrow. In this picture, Gerry is one of the snorkelers out there. Can you see him?

We checked out our book to see what else there was in the south shore area. We saw there was the best pizza place on the island in Kalaheo, so we thought we'd go there for some pizza and a beer. Great choice!
It was about 4 pm by this time, so we thought we'd leave the west shore for another day. We felt pretty gritty from the sea salt and needed a shower. Back to our surf shack to figure out what we would do tomorrow! 'Til then.
