Relaxing in Maui

Sorry if you looked at the blog yesterday and you couldn't see the pictures. I was trying something different, but it obviously didn't work. All fixed now.

Today we wanted to just relax and get to know the area where our condo is located. We just bummed around the condo for the morning, not too anxious to move. This shot is from our balcony on the 2nd floor of the condo.

We thought we would head down the road a piece to see what was at the scenic lookout we saw last night coming in. Apparently the whales really like this area and even come in close to shore. But, they heard we were coming and decided to stay clear. Therefore, no pictures.

We wanted to get in some snorkeling, so stopped at a roadside beach for a while. Gerard and I got in and puttered around a little. Some fish, but not too much. The coral parts didn't look too healthy right there.

We then moved on to the town of Lahaina. It has an historic component to it as it was one of the first, if not the first, towns in Hawaii. In fact, it was the first capital of Hawaii. In those days, it was a whaling port.

In the centre of the old town is an old Banyan Tree that is 175 years old. It's incredible. Here's Gerard sitting in the centre of the trunk.

But the tree is so large it covers the whole park. From its branches, it shoots out limbs that eventually become planted in the ground and grow like a separate tree that's attached to the main tree.

This is the story of the Hawaiian flag. We were wondering about it before because it had the Union Jack in the corner. So we thought there was a British history there, but didn't know what it was. Stupid thing though...I took a picture of the story, but not of the flag! Duh.

I'll get a picture of the flag another time.

We wandered around the small boat harbour where they have a ton of tour boats. And lots of other boats just out from the harbour. That's the island of Kaho'olawe in the background. It's uninhabited.
This boat wasn't so fortunate. We think it was overturned during the tsunami. Apparently a few boats were damaged at that time.

We wandered around the historic town. Quite a cute place. I liked the name of this coffee company. I'm not sure I'd like the coffee though.

This little guy was in town too.

We watched the sun going down behind the palm tree from our balcony while sitting there gazing at lots of whales spouting, and a wedding happening down on our tiki deck at the shore.

Tomorrow we'll start checking out more of Maui.
